2011 BMW 1 Series

As a compact premium family hatchback the BMW 1 Series was somewhat unique in that it was the car in its class to come in rear wheel drive. With a wide range of engines, although the 116d 1.5 litre diesel engine found most favour with Irish buyers. It is particualarluy flexible through the gears, smoothly delivering a decent amount of torque for 50mpg and cheap tax thanks to low emissions. It has a sophisticated ride that is a leader in its class, on a par with the VW Golf. There is a comfortable driving position as the seats have plenty of adjustment and there is a pleasant mixture of brushed metal and piano black surfaces. This is a driver oriented interior with the 6.5 inch colour screen tilted slightly towards the driver to give a cockpit-style feeling behind the wheel. As you would expect with a BMW, there is an impressive level of standard kit with Bluetooth, DAB radio, multi-function steering wheel and USB connection are fitted to all cars. Load-luggers can rest assured that with 360 litres in the boot and a low load lip along with fold down rear seats, this is (somewhat surprisingly) one of the most practical cars in its class.
