Green Flash Plates - A Bold New Look for Ireland’s EV Revolution
Electric vehicle drivers, take note: your car is about to get a whole lot more recognisable. Starting 1st July 2025, zero emission vehicles in Ireland will have the option to sport a brand-new “green flash” registration plate – a small but powerful symbol of our national shift towards cleaner motoring.
This isn’t just a new look for licence plates – it’s a sign of progress. The green flash, a bold vertical stripe on the right-hand side of the plate, will instantly identify a vehicle as zero-emission. It complements the familiar blue EU stripe on the left, while the standard county codes and registration numbers remain unchanged.
Inspired by similar moves in countries like Norway, Germany, and the UK, Ireland’s new plate design puts us in step with the wider European push for sustainable transport - if it emits zero emissions at the tailpipe, it qualifies for the green flash.
The green flash registration plate is entirely optional. Drivers can choose to make the switch when registering a new vehicle, or retrofit the plate to their existing EV. Dealerships are expected to embrace the change – and with growing demand for EVs, they’ll likely become a common sight on Irish roads.
This announcement comes as momentum behind EV adoption continues to surge in Ireland. With approximately 80,000 battery EVs already on our roads, the appetite for cleaner, quieter driving is stronger than ever. The government, through Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), is backing this transition with a host of grants, tax breaks and infrastructure investments.
The green flash is more than just a visual cue – it’s a signal of a deeper cultural shift. It’s a step toward normalising zero-emission travel, creates visibility for eco-conscious choices, and encourages both individuals and businesses to be part of the change. It’s not just about private cars; this initiative ties into a much broader ambition to urge fleets, buses, vans and more across the country, to go green and be proud to display it!
