Overview
The MG4 has gone from being one of the cheapest electric cars you could buy to becoming a more complete all-round option in the small EV market. When it first launched in 2022, it was a big deal mainly because of how affordable it was.
Now though, there is much more competition, and MG has essentially split the range in Ireland. The MG4 Urban is now the entry-level version, designed to offer an affordable electric car that is practical, easy to drive, and well equipped for everyday use.
Rather than focusing on maximum range or performance, the MG4 Urban is aimed at buyers who want a simple, efficient EV that covers the basics well without a premium price tag.
Pros
- Excellent value for money
- Low running costs
- Spacious cabin for its size
- Smooth and quiet electric drive
- Good level of standard equipment
Cons
- Interior materials feel basic in places
- Infotainment system can be slow to respond
Exterior
The design hasn’t really changed all that much, which to be fair isn’t a bad thing. It still looks quite sharp and modern, especially compared to some of the more plain-looking rivals.
The MG4 Urban keeps the same overall shape as the rest of the MG4 range, with a compact hatchback design that gives it a good balance between practicality and style. There are some small design differences compared to higher-spec models, but overall it still looks like a modern electric car rather than a budget option.

Interior
Inside is where the MG4 Urban focuses on being practical and easy to use. The layout is simple, with a clean dashboard design and a focus on everyday usability.
You get a digital driver display, a central infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it easy to connect your phone and access navigation, music and apps. The infotainment system is straightforward, although it can feel a little basic than some newer rivals.
Space is one of the MG4 Urban’s biggest strengths. For a car of this size, there is plenty of room for passengers, especially in the rear seats. It feels more spacious than many small electric hatchbacks. The boot is also practical enough for everyday use, whether that’s shopping, commuting or carrying luggage.

Performance
The MG4 Urban is designed more for everyday driving rather than outright performance, but it still feels quick enough around town. The electric motor delivers smooth and instant acceleration, which makes it easy to drive in traffic and around urban areas.
With its battery size and efficiency-focused setup, the MG4 Urban is aimed at people who mainly want a reliable daily driver rather than a long-distance motorway cruiser.
Reliability
This is probably where things aren’t quite as strong. MG hasn’t built the strongest reputation for reliability compared to some other brands. That being said, the MG4 Urban comes with MG’s 7-year warranty, which is one of its biggest advantages and gives buyers extra peace of mind.

Running Costs
Running costs are one of the biggest positives here. Being electric, the MG4 Urban should be cheaper to run day-to-day compared with a petrol or diesel car. Charging at home is where the biggest savings come in, and maintenance costs should also be lower thanks to fewer moving parts.
The MG4 Urban also includes regenerative braking, which helps recover energy while driving and improves efficiency. Considering the equipment, practicality and low running costs, it still represents good value in the EV market.

Handling
The MG4 Urban is easy to drive and comfortable enough for everyday use. It isn’t designed to be a sporty hatchback, but it feels well suited to commuting and city driving.
The steering is light, visibility is good, and it’s an easy car to get comfortable with. The ride is generally comfortable, although there can be some road noise at motorway speeds. Overall though, it does exactly what it is designed to do.

Safety
Safety is a strong point. The MG4 Urban comes with a good amount of driver assistance technology as standard, including MG Pilot, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, parking sensors and a reversing camera.
These features help make the car easier and less stressful to drive, especially on longer journeys. It feels like a safe and sensible choice for families or anyone moving into their first electric car.

The MG4 Urban isn’t the shock bargain the original MG4 was when it first arrived, but it remains a strong option in the affordable EV market. Its biggest strengths are its practicality, easy driving experience, technology and low running costs.
It may not be the most premium electric car out there, and some rivals offer better interior quality or a more refined driving experience. However, if you want an affordable, practical and easy-to-live-with electric car, the MG4 Urban still makes a lot of sense.
